BECOME A GENEROUS “RECEIVER”
When Deidra was getting ready to move, she opened a closet and packed the leather briefcase that her late employer had given her once when she had been promoted. Deidra loved the briefcase, and had been very touched by the gift when she received it. However, years later, Deidra realizes that she never really conveyed her feelings to her old boss. Now, with the wisdom of hindsight, Deidra wonders why she had been so stingy with her thanks.
It’s often just as important to receive with an open heart as it is to give. By definition, relationships of all kinds have to do with reciprocity and mutuality. Relationships that fall apart often do so because they are out of balance; they experience ratio strain. In her relationship with her friend Margo, Fredda is fed up because she feels as though she always gives, gives, gives. Margo, on the other hand, thinks that Fredda never allows Margo to give those things that she can. There is always an interesting connection between giver and recipient. Some people, for example, prefer the role of caretaker; they are uncomfortable when someone tries to take care of them, and they sort of “hijack” all the giving in a relationship. The thing to remember is that giver and receiver are building good karma together, so give someone else a chance to give.
Think about how much pleasure and joy we get when we give a present to a child who is truly excited and happy about receiving it. We were probably all better receivers when we were children. Nonetheless, being a good receiver is an art that’s worth relearning. Say thank you. Be appreciative. Show your joy. Feel it.
